About West Virginia

The beautiful state of West Virginia is bordered to the east by Virginia and by Ohio and Kentucky to the west. Pennsylvania and Maryland border this state to the north while Virginia borders it to the south. This southern state offers some of the most beautiful terrains anywhere on the eastern coast.

The state capital is Charleston, which doubles as the largest city in the state. A member of the U.S. since 1863, this state is most often visited for its wide variety of outdoor explorations. Visitors can go white water rafting down beautiful wild rivers, go rock climbing and caving, or take a turn in the mountains either hiking or mountain biking.

Many hunters and fishermen travel to this state as well to take advantage of the available wildlife known to be a great catch.

West Virginia has claim to being the only state in the nation that is completely contained in the Appalachian Mountains. The entire state is mountainous with all the wonders that come with that type of terrain. Visitors come in the fall to watch the leaves change colors and in the warmer months for hiking, swimming, hunting, fishing, and every other outdoor amusement that could be demanded.

Three quarters of the state lie in the Cumberland Plateau and the Allegheny Plateau regions. These areas are very rugged and have an average elevation of about fifteen hundred feet above sea level. This is the highest elevation out of all of the states lying east of the Mississippi River.
