At Rush ACLS we understand that the best way to battle cardiovascular emergencies is to prevent them from ever happening in the first place! Read on to find out what a resident of Washington can do to maintain a healthy heart.

Active Living

Washington State is a great place to find all sorts of physical activity. One of the best ways to maintain a healthy heart is to be physically active for about 20-30 minutes every day. Here are some suggestions for being active in the state of Washington.

Hiking

Trails in Washington are abundant. You can find great hiking trails in national and state parks and in urban areas. Here is a link to the Washington State Parks page which gives a variety of tail and outdoor activity ideas. http://www.parks.wa.gov/trails/

Bicycling

Biking is a great way to stay healthy and you can do it almost anywhere. Do you prefer to mountain bike or do you prefer to bike in more urban areas? Either way, regular biking is a phenomenal way to lower your risk of heart attacks, heart disease and other heart-related issues. Check out the Washington State Department of Transportation page devoted entirely to bicycling to find out more about bicycling in Washington. http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/bike/

Skiing

Washington residents are fortunate because they have some great skiing nearby. Skiing is a great way to get outside and stay active during the cold winter months where it is very tempting to sit inside and watch TV. Healthy Diet

The other primary way to combat an unhealthy heart is eat well. The lack of physical activity combined with daily intake of high fat and high sugar food has created high levels of obesity and heart problems in Washington.

One good way to eat right is to learn how to shop right. A farmers market is a great place to support local business while ensuring that you are getting healthy food. Here is a link to the farmers market association in Washington if you want to find out more. http://www.wafarmersmarkets.com/

The most famous farmers market is located in Seattle. It is called Pike’s Place market and is a great place to visit. If you like to eat out, here is a list of some of the healthiest and good restaurants in the Seattle area. As a Washington PALS, ACLS and BLS medical professional, please remember to encourage the people that you help to eat right and stay active. http://www.yelp.com/search?find_desc=healthy+restaurants&find_loc=Seattle%2C+WA
