Living Healthy in South Dakota

Active Living

A physically active lifestyle can go a long way in preventing cardiovascular-related issues. In South Dakota, the rate of heart disease is 4.6% and the rate of people who have suffered from a heart attack is 4.4%. Experts will say that 20-30 minutes of light to moderate daily physical activity can go a long way in preventing these types of heart-related ailments. Here are some ways to be more physically active in South Dakota.

Daily Routine

You can also make some small changes to your daily routine in order to increase your level of physical activity.

  • Ride your bicycle to work instead of drive.
  • Take a long walk with your family after dinner.
  • Park your car at the far end of the parking lot to increase your walk.
  • Take the stairs instead of the escalator or elevator whenever possible.
  • During your breaks at work, walk around the office instead of surf the internet.

Healthy Diet

The adult obesity rate in South Dakota is approximately 28%. As our South Dakota BLS, PALS and ALCS certification customers understand, obesity to can lead to a variety of cardiovascular-related issues. Here are some tips for maintaining a healthy diet.

  • Dish your meals up on smaller plates to force yourself to eat less.
  • Slow down when you eat. It takes time for your brain to register that your stomach is full.
  • Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables.
  • Chop up vegetables at the beginning of the week and eat those for snacks.
  • Avoid pre-packaged and processed food. Try to cook with fresh ingredients.
  • Avoid grains as much as possible. If you are going to eat grains, make sure to eat whole grains.
