About South Carolina
The American Civil War started off with the first shots fired in Charleston, South Carolina. This is now the capital of the state and the home of many historical attractions that bring in many visitors each year. Located between North Carolina and Georgia on the eastern U.S. Atlantic Ocean coastline, this is one of the most historically rich southern states.
Today, the Fort Sumter National Monument is erected in Charleston to memorialize the day those first shots were fired and the Civil War tipped off. Other historical attractions include the Old Slave Mart Museum in Charleston and the Benjamin Mays Historic Site which recounts the home and life of a sharecropper's son.
For vacation seekers who want to relax and unwind by the water, the 200 mile coastline offers top resorts, hotels, and spas with immediate beachfront access. Myrtle and Huntington Beaches are two of the most popular beach areas, though they do attract crowds of partying youngsters participating in Spring Break every year.
Many families choose Hilton Head Island off the South Carolina coast as their premier summer destination. This is a small Island that offers pristine white beaches and a lot of amusements for explorers of all ages. It has been rated as one of the top vacation destinations for families and tends to have loyal vacationers who come back year after year.
