About Oklahoma
Once well known Indian Territory with a rich history from the pioneering days, Oklahoma became the 46th state to join the union in 1907. It sits directly on top of Texas and is surrounded by Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, and New Mexico. As part of the line of states that lead from the southern to northern U.S. borders, it is considered part of the Frontier Strip and was once considered the land of the Native American Indians.
With such a rich historical past, it is no wonder that the top attractions in the state are historical in nature. The state is well known for being the final end to the Trail of Tears, which was a path that the Native Indians were forced to take out of their homes during the pioneering days.
The Honey Springs Battlefield in Checotah is a popular attraction that memorializes one of the biggest battles of the Civil War, which was fought between Indians and western pioneers. There are many other historical attractions as well as historical museums dotting every area of this state.
Some of the more modern day attractions include wineries, amusement parks, and some of the best rated zoos in the entire country. In Tulsa, visitors can even combine the historical aspect of the state with wild animals at the Tulsa Zoo and Living Museum. In Pawnee, zoo adventure is taken to new heights at the Skedee Creek Preserve which is home to a wide variety of exotic animals that visitors can get to know up close.
For camping, hiking and other outdoor adventures Oklahoma does feature many state parks that are accessible to the general public.
