About North Carolina

North Carolina was one of the original thirteen colonies, founded in 1653. It is located on the eastern border between Virginia and South Carolina with West Virginia and Kentucky bordering to the west. The eastern coast is lined by the Atlantic Ocean which gives the state lots of shoreline beaches that brings a competitive tourism industry to the state.

There are four different geographical regions within this state: the mountains, the foothills, the coast and the Piedmont (flat lands). Each area offers something quite unique to state visitors.

The city of Mayberry is the home of the regions tallest mountaintop, Mount Mitchell. This is the highest peak in the region which allows visitors who climb to the top to view several of the neighboring states in one amazing view.

The coast is the other big tourist with a peak season falling during the summer months. Visitors can enjoy sandy beaches, explore the Cape Hatteras lighthouse, and learn from many original battlefield sites from the Revolutionary War and the Civil War.

North Carolina is also home to a variety of popular military bases, the unforgettable Andy Griffith, and NASCSAR racing.
