Healthy living in Nebraska

The team at Rush ACLS developed this section of the website to give our Nebraska BLS, PALS and ACLS certification customers a resource for healthy living. We hope to promote healthy living along with providing emergency response training. The best way to fight the war against heart attacks, heart disease and cardiac arrests is through preventative measures. Please read on to discover some ways that the residents of Nebraska can lead healthy and active lifestyles.

Active lifestyle

Approximately 4% of the residents of Nebraska suffer from heart disease. Leading a physically active lifestyle can go a long way in preventing heart disease and other cardiac-related issues. Experts recommend no less than 20 minutes of light to moderate daily physical activity. Below are some ways that the residents of Nebraska can stay physically active.

Bicycle

Cycling is a fun way to increase your daily physical activity. You can bicycle to work or simply do it for fun. You can road bike, mountain bike or just cruise around. Here is a site that can help you begin bicycling in Nebraska.https://www.bikewalknebraska.org/

Daily routine

Building in a regular workout regiment can be difficult and time-consuming. Here are some ways to increase your physical activity by changing some of the small things in your daily schedule.

  • Take you dog on a long walk.

  • Walk over hills instead of around them.

  • Walk up the stairs instead of taking the escalator or elevator.

  • Get off the bus stop one stop early to walk the rest of the way.

  • Work in the yard.

Eating healthy

Along with exercise, it is very important to maintain a proper diet. We encourage our Nebraska ACLS, PALS and BLS certification customers to use the following healthy eating tips.

  • Increase the amount of lean protein into your daily meals. This includes lean chicken and beans.

  • Vary your vegetables and fruit. A good way to do this is to buy fruit and vegetables of different colors.

  • Drink skim or 1% milk instead of 2% or whole milk.

  • Avoid lots of grains. If you are going to eat grains, make sure to eat whole grains.

  • Avoid foods that are high in fat and sugar.

You can also support your local farmers by shopping at Nebraska’s many farmer’s market for your food. Farmers’ markets are great places to stock up on healthy foods. Here is a list of the farmers’ markets in Nebraska. https://omahafarmersmarket.com/

Community heroes rally to save young runner's life amidst cross-country meet crisis

The markings outlining the cross-country trail at Walnut Grove Park in Omaha remain visible, guiding runners through the terrain. Among these runners is Memphis Zabawa, a seventh-grader from Millard North Middle School, driven by a desire to boost his endurance for soccer. However, on a day marked by unhealthy air quality, his race took a frightening turn due to his asthma. During the meet, Memphis struggled, prompting concern from onlookers like Julianne Gray, a teacher unaware of the Zabawa family. As Memphis collapsed, a swift response ensued. Gray, equipped with CPR and first aid training, sprang into action, joined by a nurse and others present. Their rapid intervention likely averted long-term consequences. Miraculously, Memphis recovered without lasting damage. Now, back to running and soccer, his parents emphasize the importance of prompt action in emergencies. The family met their unsung heroes, eternally grateful for their life-saving actions.
