About Mississippi
Ratifying the U.S. constitution and becoming an official member of the union in 1870, Mississippi sits on the southern border of the country in the southeastern corner. It is bordered by Louisiana and Arkansas to the west, Tennessee to the north, and Alabama to the east. The Gulf of Mexico offers a short coastline on the southern border of the state. Through the western region the Mississippi River, which flows northward offering a variety of tourist attractions not only for Mississippi but for other states as well.
The Gulf Coast in Mississippi may be much shorter than some of the other Gulf Coast states, but it offers all of the great vacation attractions that can be found all along the southern U.S. border. This includes sandy beaches, swimming and surfing opportunities, and a variety of top class hotels, casinos, and theme parks.
Another popular attraction in this state can only be enjoyed during September of each year. This is the Natchez Pilgrimage Tours, which allow visitors to tour some of the most beautiful mansions and plantations located in the state. Since most of these homes are owned by private citizens, the only way to get a good glimpse of them and explore the life of Southern Mississippi culture is during this one month of pilgrimage.
There are also some rather unique attractions that bring in tons of visitors each year, including the hot air balloon races that occur in October in the city of Natchez.
