About Maine
Originally a part of the now state of Massachusetts, Maine split away to become its own state in 1820. It is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, two provinces of Canada, and New Hampshire. It sits at the northeastern corner of the U.S., representing the largest state in a geographical section of the country typically referred to as New England. The capital city is Augusta, but Eastport gets the fame of being the northernmost city in the entire country.
Mount Katahdin is a notable location in Maine because it marks the ending point of the Appalachian Mountains and the beginning point of the newer Appalachian Trail. Many visitors are drawn to this mountain terrain for hiking, camping, and other outdoor adventures.
For those travelers who enjoy being outdoors, this state has plenty to offer, despite miles and miles of sandy beaches along the coastline. Acadia National Park and Mount Desert Island are two great places to explore the hilly, mountainous terrain. Low flying plane tours of these areas are extremely popular as well.
Yet, many visitors come to this state to experience the excitement offered by the Atlantic Ocean coastline. During the prime vacation season in the warmer months from May to September, visitors can enjoy relaxing on the beaches or even exploring the large waterfront amusement park called Palace Playland.
Those more interested in getting out on the water and seeing what the ocean really has to offer enjoy lobster boat excursions, deep sea fishing, kayaking, canoe trips, sailing adventures, and even whale watching tours. There are also a variety of day cruises and longer cruises that operate all year round.
