About Illinois
Illinois is considered a central state in the U.S., though it lies closer to the east coast than the west. It sits along the northern border of the country with Wisconsin to the north, Iowa and Missouri to the west, Kentucky at the southern tip, and Indiana to the east. The northeastern corner of the state hits Lake Michigan. The Mississippi River flows through the western portion of the state, taking up considerable amount of land.
Chicago is located in the northern part of the state and represents the sprawling major metropolitan area in the state. The city itself and surrounding suburbs which spread into neighboring states are home to most of the industrial and commercial zones in the area. It includes sprawling neighborhoods packed with people who live the stereotypical big city life that many people associate with large towns in the U.S.
Travelers who want to get outdoors and experience scenic natural views will not be satisfied with Chicago. This area is known more for high class spas, shopping tours, and sightseeing tours for those interested in big city architecture.
Springfield is the capital city of Illinois and attracts many visitors who are interested in national history. They are drawn to Abraham Lincoln's home at the Lincoln Home National Historic Site, the Oak Ridge Cemetery where Lincoln was buried, and the Tinsley Building which was long ago where Lincoln practiced law. The city offers many other historical sites that related to Lincoln's life, all of which can be toured by visitors.
For those who would not be content without getting wet on vacation, there are always attractions such as the Chain O' Lakes State Park in Spring Grove. This is a water park that offers water skiing adventures, fishing, and boating. Visitors usually enjoy camping out and the area attracts a lot of birdwatchers.
