About Georgia
Georgia was one of the first states to join the U.S. union, officially declaring statehood in early 1788. Located in the southeast region of the country just above Florida, it is also bordered by Alabama, Tennessee, North Carolina, and South Carolina.
On the southeast border of the state is a small coastline running a mere 100 miles that gives access to a unique tourist attraction known as the Golden Isles. This is a series of small Islands in the Atlantic Ocean which offer some of the most beautiful scenery in Georgia.
While some of the islands are off limits to visitors because they have private owners, many are part of state and national park systems which visitors can easily access from mainland Georgia. Most people choose to vacation on a specific island, since each offers high quality resorts and hotels with direct beachfront access and other amusements. Surfing and swimming watching for dolphins are popular amusements on the islands.
The Georgia mainland also offers plenty adventure for visitors with a wide array of outdoor activities available. The coastline is popular for scenic lighthouses while off-beach areas such as Georgia's section of the Chattahoochee National Forest offer difficult hiking opportunities with some of the most beautiful natural scenery on the east coast.
Visitors to these more remote areas of the state give up the luxury hotels and resorts to camp out or stay in cabins nestled in the natural Georgia terrain. The most difficult terrain of the Appalachian Trail passes through this area, attracting many advanced hikers and outdoor enthusiasts.
Many Georgia cities offer ample opportunity for horseback riding and golfing as well.
