About Colorado
Colorado is located in the central region of the U.S., more toward the western half of the country. It is completely landlocked and surrounded by New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, and Oklahoma. It is most well known by travelers for its tremendous Rocky Mountain views and river attractions.
Many of the attractions are centered on canyons and mountain parks that are protected by the federal government as treasured areas to be preserved. These include the Rocky Mountain National Park, the Santa Fe National Historic Trail, the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, and the Colorado National Monument.
The main river attraction is whitewater rafting. Water enthusiasts and thrill seekers enjoy rushing down river through canyons on large round rafts, the danger of flipping over always present. Some of the most exciting river rafting adventures occur in this state.
There are also many popular ski resorts which offer top quality accommodations and snowy adventures during the peak snow season. The Wolf Creek Ski Area offers the most snow in the state and is close to the Pagosa Springs where visitors relax in famous hot spring pools.
There are also some rather unusual attractions which many visitors enjoy as side excursions from their main outdoor adventures. For instance, if you go to the town of Ashcroft you can spook yourself out with ghost towns that many believe are still inhabited by miners from the 19th century. If you visit the Colorado National Monument in the northwest, you can view sandstone formations at Coke Ovens which are regarded as quite strange, to say the least.
