About Alaska
Alaska has the coldest climate of all U.S. states, located in the extreme northwest corner of the country and connected into Canada. Today is made up of a large variety of people from all over the world and the tough terrain and climate make this a difficult place for most people to live, but it has been highly sought after in history for its rich sources of natural resources, especially oil.
Before statehood, the Alaskan people lived a rugged lifestyle that included many activities that are controversial today, such as whaling. They were avid hunters and fishers. This way of life continues in hundreds of small villages where natives continue to live in this manner. They are estimated to represent about 15% of today's Alaskan population.
Bigger cities such as Achorage have moved on with the modern world and life resembles what most people from other states would call "normal life." Most travelers who want to explore the outdoor adventures offered by the Alaskan climate will stay here. The accommodations are more what the typical vacationer is used to experiencing, with luxury hotels available all year round.
For those feeling more adventurous or who want to get a taste of how native Alaskans live, there are lodges and cabins that can be rented in more remote areas. Some are located close to native villages, but this means the big tourist attractions and bigger cities like Achorage will be harder to access.
The best of both worlds is also offered with cabins that feel as if they are out in the natural Alaskan habitat, but which are actually just outside of Anchorage or other large cities. This gives visitors the option of enjoying outdoor adventures such as hiking, hunting, or fishing, while still maintaining access to the big city life they are used to experiencing.
The Denali National Park is a big tourist attraction as vacationers can feel as if they are out in the Alaskan wilds while being completely safe.
